Lord,

Some days my soul forgets what is true.

Worries rise quickly.
Failures replay themselves.
Old hurts come back to the surface.

You forgive what still makes us ashamed.
Healing comes from Your hand.
Redemption reaches into the pit.
Steadfast love crowns weak and weary people.

You are not harsh with Your children. Your patience runs deeper than our weakness, and Your compassion meets us when we come home.

Today we bring You our tired hearts.

Speak forgiveness to the one carrying shame.
Bring comfort to the one walking through grief.
Give strength to the one whose body is weak.
Remind the forgotten heart that Your love is from everlasting to everlasting.

Teach us this week to bless You with honest hearts. Help us notice small mercies, forgive quickly, love gently, and live like people who have been crowned with grace.

Bless the Lord, O my soul.

I need to remember this when the old failures do not need much space..a quiet room is enough.

Scripture opens a horizon my guilt cannot cross: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

East and west never meet. A man can travel north until the compass turns him south, yet east keeps going. West keeps going. God chose that picture for forgiven sin. He placed it beyond the reach of shame because Christ carried it there in His own blood.

Then Christ came.

At the cross, my sin received its full judgment. At the empty tomb, the Father declared the payment accepted. So when shame tries to name me by what Jesus has already borne, I lift my eyes to the risen Son.

The Father does not call me by the sin Christ carried away.

He calls me child.

Most Americans do not need someone to convince them to own a Bible. They need someone to explain why the Bible they own no longer owns them.

That may be the quietest tragedy inside George Barna’s American Worldview Inventory 2025. The study reported that only 4% of American adults hold a biblical worldview. It also found that 92% live with syncretism, a stitched-together religion made from borrowed pieces.

A little Jesus. A little self-help. A little politics. A little therapy language. A little online outrage. A little moral feeling. A little “God wants me happy.” A little “my truth.” A Bible verse placed gently over a life the Bible is never allowed to govern.

America has not run out of religion. We are drowning in it.

I have walked back to my truck after praying with hurting people and felt the silence sit beside me all the way home. Grief can change the air in a house. Even prayer can shrink to a whisper because the heart has spent all its strength trying to stand.

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11).

His joy.

He said this with betrayal already moving toward Him..thorns and nails waiting down the road. Still, Jesus spoke of joy as something He could place inside His people.

The world gives joy that depends on good circumstances. Christ gives joy with scars in His hands.

This is the joy sorrow cannot bury. It lets tears fall in the presence of the Savior who wept at a grave, bled on a cross and walked out of His own tomb alive.

Grief can sit at the table, but it cannot take the throne. Christ remains and His joy keeps breathing where the world expected silence.

Only 27 percent of Americans now say clergy have high or very high honesty and ethics.

Sit with that number for a moment. It means the pastor no longer enters the American imagination as an assumed man of truth. Something in the room has changed. The old trust is gone. A question now hangs in the air before he ever speaks: Can this man be trusted?

That frightens me because I know how easily a lie can sound like my own voice. Eden began with a question, then the fruit came later. Distrust entered first, quiet as a snake through grass and the mind became the doorway.

Paul felt the danger when he wrote, “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3).

Led astray..that phrase makes me ache. A crowded soul loses sight of Christ. Money, applause, comfort, outrage and the little screen in my hand keep tugging at my eyes until the Savior who should fill the room begins to blur.

So I ask the Spirit to bring every thought home to Jesus. Carry me to the cross, where the serpent’s head was crushed. Fix my mind on the empty tomb.

The whisper is old. The tomb is empty. Christ gets the final word.

Paul knew that groan. “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24). That sounds like a man tired of himself, tired of the tug, tired of knowing the right path and still feeling weakness breathe near him.

Then Romans 8 answers like a verdict Christ purchased in blood: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

The struggle is real, yet it is not the sentence over me. Christ bore the sentence. The Spirit of life now lives where sin once ruled, teaching forgiven people to fight from mercy instead of for mercy.

Sin may still claw at the door, but it has lost the deed to the house.

So I rise, repent and step back onto the field. Condemnation has been nailed to the cross and the Spirit of life still breathes in me.

The question comes quietly, usually after the house has gone still. Shame waits for silence. The heart can be cruel after failure. It remembers the sin with perfect detail and forgets the Savior with shocking ease.

I have come back to the Lord with the same shame in my hands and wondered if heaven sighed when it saw me coming.

John writes mercy for the heart that has turned against itself: “For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things” (1 John 3:20).

God knows more than the sin my heart keeps replaying. He knows the blood of Christ..the debt was paid without remainder.

The devil wants me to believe grace has limited funds.

The gospel says Christ paid in full.

So when my heart condemns me, I run to the Savior. The cross never shrinks my sin. It displays the blood of Christ as sufficient for it.

Lord,

If You had not been on our side, we would not be here.

You have carried us through dangers we saw and dangers we never knew were near. You have held us when the waters rose, when fear pressed hard and when we did not have strength to hold ourselves.

Thank You for being our help.

This week, remind every weary heart that we are not alone. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

In the last lesson we looked at the ways God is unlike us. In this chapter we move into another part of God’s character, what Grudem calls the “communicable” attributes. That simply means these are qualities God shares with us in part. We never share them fully. We are creatures and He is God. Yet we do reflect them in a real way because we are made in His image.

That matters for everyday Christian living.

When Scripture says God is good, loving, wise, holy, truthful, and righteous, it is giving us more than theology for the study desk. It is showing us the kind of God we worship and the kind of people we are called to become.

Peter heard the rooster and every brave word he had spoken came back as evidence against him. “And he went out and wept bitterly” (Luke 22:62). There are failures that do more than embarrass us. They accuse us. They sit in the room after everyone else has left and keep saying, You really are that weak.

But the Savior Peter denied had already set His face toward the cross, where sin and guilt would be laid on Him. Failure did not get the last word. Mercy did.

By another fire, with breakfast waiting on the shore, the risen Christ asked, “Do you love me?” Peter answered, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you” (John 21:17).

The rooster told Peter the truth about himself. The risen Christ told Peter the greater truth about mercy.

I want the door open, the pain gone and the answer clear. Paul and Silas sang with locked feet. The prison had given them no reason to hope, except the one reason that still holds when every other reason is gone.

Christ was worthy in the dark.

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God” (Acts 16:25).

Nothing about that room had changed. The blood was still drying on their backs and the chain still gripped their feet. Yet a hymn rose from the place where pain usually steals the voice.

Then God shook the prison.

The first miracle was not the open door. It was the song in the dark…praise is not pretending the chains are gone. Praise is naming Christ Lord while the iron still cuts.

So I am learning to sing before the earthquake, because my Savior entered death, broke its locks and came out alive.

I know that feeling. I know because fear has narrowed my own vision. It can turn a stack of unknowns or one late-night thought into the largest thing in the room. Christ has not changed. My sight has.

Then Scripture lifts my eyes: “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17).

All things.

The breath in my lungs or the burden on my shoulders or the sorrow I cannot lift. The tomorrow with its locked doors and unanswered questions. Christ holds what my hands cannot.

So I do not need a smaller problem this morning. I need a larger sight of Jesus.

The cross tells me He loved me with blood. The empty tomb tells me He reigns with scars. Today, He will hold me together.

America should protect the Mormon’s right to worship. Religious liberty belongs to all of us, or eventually it belongs to none of us. Yet the First Amendment does not define the faith once delivered to the saints. The state may recognize religion, but Scripture reveals Christ.

Most American Christians will not be tempted by Mormonism because they carefully studied its history and rejected Joseph Smith as a prophet. The temptation usually comes another way. Two young men may stand at the door in white shirts and dark ties, speaking warmly of Jesus, family, morality, faith, baptism, and eternity. There may even be a Bible in their hands.

A false gospel rarely walks up the driveway snarling. It comes with kindness. It looks clean, disciplined, sincere and serious.

Lord,

You know me completely and still You love me.

You know when I sit down and when I rise up. The thoughts I never say out loud, the fears I try to hide and the prayers I can barely whisper.

Thank You that I cannot outrun Your presence.
In the bright places, You are there.
In the dark places, You are there too.

Search my heart this week.
Show me what needs to change.
Heal what is wounded.
Lead me in the way everlasting.

And remind every tired soul reading this that they are seen, known, held, and loved by You.

When we start thinking about God’s character, we are standing on holy ground. This lesson begins with what Grudem calls God’s “incommunicable” attributes. That is simply a way of speaking about the ways God is unlike us. Some parts of His character shine in us in small measure. Love does. Mercy does. Wisdom does. Yet there are other ways in which He stands alone, high above His creation.

That matters more than it may seem at first.

A God who is too much like us cannot save us. A God who fits neatly into our categories will never command our worship. A God who depends on the world, changes with the weather, learns as history unfolds, or is boxed into a single place would be a god made in our image. Scripture gives us Someone far greater.
